Rapid City Academy Career Learning Center

The Rapid City Academy at the Career Learning Center is designed for students who are at risk of not graduating and have earned eleven (11) or more credits.  Students in this program work a designated number of hours per week at the student’s own pace.  Instruction is individualized and school district’s curriculum.  Students may be full-time Academy students, or they may be dual or tri-enrolled with Central or Stevens High School or perhaps Jefferson Academy and/or Western Dakota Tech (WDT).

Application Process

Juniors and seniors attending Central or Stevens High School who are at risk of not graduating should contact their school counselor to discuss enrollment at the CLC Academy.  Application packets are available at the counseling offices of the home schools as well as at the CLC and the Jefferson Academy.  Upon completion of the application and its return to CLC, the youth coordinator will determine the student’s eligibility at CLC.  If eligible, the student and parent/guardian will meet with the coordinator to determine acceptance into the program.  Once accepted, the student must attend a full-day orientation.  Teachers will set up contract dates with students for completion of classes on the student’s first day of school.

Transitioning to the World of Work

In addition to providing the standard high school requirements, the CLC Academy program is designed to facilitate students with the transition from high school to work, post-secondary technical training, or college.  Students can gain valuable skills in the world of work by participating in job shadowing, mentorship programs, and work experience programs.  In addition, the Academy’s attendance policy promotes a good work ethic to prepare students for the world of work.

Graduation

Upon graduation, diplomas are issued by either Stevens or Central High School.  Students can participate in the Academy graduation ceremonies.  They are held three times a year: at the end of first semester, the end of second semester, or at the end of the extended year program.  Students are also welcome to participate in both their home school’s graduation and the Academy’s graduation.
