This Drivers Education course is a South Dakota State approved program and all instructors are South Dakota State Certified Drivers Education Instructors. Course is open to students ages 14 and above and it is recommended that the student have his or her Instruction Permit and have driven with a licensed individual prior to the Drivers Education class.
An Instruction Permit allows an individual to drive for one year when accompanied by a licensed operator over 18 years of age (who has at least one year of driving experience and is occupying the seat next to the new driver). If the new driver is under 18 years of age and does not hold a valid South Dakota drivers license, they must hold the Instruction Permit for 180 consecutive days.
Students in the Drivers Education Program must successfully complete the program approved by the Department of Education with a passing score of 80% or higher in the written and/or driving portions of the class.
The successful completion will allow the student driver under 18 years of age to waive 90 days of the 180-day Instruction Permit required by law. Thirty hours will be spent in the classroom and an additional six hours behind-the-wheel driving are required.
Cost is $249.00. Payment and registration must be received prior to class. Students arrange the six hours of driving time with the instructor and it is often scheduled after the classroom requirement is completed due to accommodating many students and their schedules. If the instructor feels the student needs more behind-the-wheel experience than the six hours to pass, it will be arranged at an additional cost. Please bring paper and pen/pencil.
Withdrawals and Refunds: Due to the limited enrollment in Drivers Education classes, a $20 processing fee will be deducted from all refunds. Rescheduling students for any Drivers Education class must be done 3 working days in advance of the first class day or a $20 processing fee will be assessed. Contact the Career Learning Center, 394-5120, to reschedule.
